Stoner Drags Elbow at 1,000 FPS

Red Bull made this video of Casey Stoner using a camera capable of shooting 1,000 frames per second, which makes for some stunning slow motion.  Of course, since Red Bull can afford the most successful F1 team, I suppose they can afford some pretty nice cameras as well.

Outside that impolite bump from Valentino Rossi at Jerez (which led to a DNF), Stoner has been on the podium at every round this year, winning four times (out of seven race finishes) and taking pole position five times. If you look closely at the video, I think you can see the spokes in the rear wheel spinning a bit quicker than those in the front as Stoner exits the corner (despite a still severe lean angle).

An excellent, recently released book on Valentino Rossi and MotoGP in the modern era is Ring of Fire. In it, the author notes that, in his championship-winning year, many hacks opined that it was the bike (and not Casey) who won the championship, and that those folks must’ve somehow missed the fact that former team mates (and extremely skilled riders) like Marco Melandri (and subsequently Hayden) were mid-packers or back-markers… on the same exact bike. Face reality folks: Casey will be World Champion again this year, and rightfully so.

BTW “Elbows” is already one of Ben Spies’ nicknames.

No better illustration explaining why he goes to work to ride and I ride to go to work. Sigh.

    Art in motion.

    Yep. Alien.

Does anyone know what his actual corner speed was for this shot?

Man, do I love slow motion cameras, it shows just how much talent and confidence these kids have. Amazing.

Wow, that’s beautiful. More slo-mo videos!

One thing I noticed – because of the super long focal length of the lens used to shoot this footage, the perspective is a bit weird. When you look closely, Stoner isn’t really sliding quite as much as it at first appears – only at the exit, when you can clearly see the rear slide out. At the beginning of the turn it looks like the whole bike is moving sideways, but I think that’s just the weird perspective.

Maybe we should nickname him “Elbowz”!

D’Guy can ride. That is all. I see Dirck noticed the rear power-sliding too…Haaaa, and here i was thinking i was “seen things” because of my Daily Morning Sugar Rush…(^_^ )

    not sure what’s impressive…? casey…? or bridgestone…?

    • Martin says:

Norm, perhaps it’s time to give up commenttating if you can’t tell. Unless of course you want to start a rumor that Bridgestone is supplying casey a different spec tyre to everyone else? Yes, that would be the Norm G we all know.

The best riders win no matter what equipment they have….end of story….
