In weather that ranged from a drying track, with a dry race line, to pouring rain, Honda’s Colin Edwards (first race) and Suzuki’s Pierfrancesco Chili (second race) came out on top at Austria’s A1-Ring on August 29, 1999.
In the first race, Edwards led most of the way, but there was carnage behind him. With just a few laps left, second place Aaron Slight (Honda) and third place Troy Corser (Ducati) crashed in the pouring rain, after much of the first race had been run on a drying track. This handed Carl Fogarty (Ducati) second place.
The rain soaked second race resulted in victory for Chili, which was the first for the fuel injected GSXR 750, and Chili’s first since switching to a Suzuki this year. Corser was second, and Slight was third. Fogarty finished fourth in the second race, padding his championship points lead on the day.
