Jeff Emig looked smooth, relaxed and, most importantly, fast, in winning the U.S. Open this weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada. Emig, who has formed his own team (major sponsors include The Edge Sports, Shift, FMF, and White Brothers), loves his new Yamaha (which was modified in his own garage).
Emig won Saturday night’s main event, and finished second on Sunday. This was good enough to take the overall victory (and its $100,000 paycheck) over second-place Greg Albertyn (Suzuki) (6/1 for the two evenings) and third place Ricky Carmichael (Kawasaki) (2/5).
The gnarly indoor track bit two pre-race favorites, Ezra Lusk (Honda) and Kevin Windham (Honda). Crashes kept Windham off the podium both nights, while Lusk rebounded from fourteenth place in Saturday’s main event to finish third on Sunday.
Travis Pastrana (Suzuki) also ran up front (as high as third place) in Sunday’s race, and looked remarkably poised for a 16 year old before crashes in the whoops pushed him back to fourteenth.
