Negotiations are underway for the sale of historic Italian manufacturer Moto Guzzi to
Austrian-owned KTM. Several other corporations showed interest in purchasing the company,
but were put off by the high asking price (around $70 million US dollars). These included
MV Agusta and Ducati. Neither company, however, has presented a firm offer for a buyout as
KTM has reportedly done.
Guzzi would complement KTM better than either of the Italian manufacturers,
as KTM does not have a street bike line at this time. Though Ducati and MV may think of Guzzi as a
quasi-cruiser marque, Guzzi has a history of producing pure sportbikes and aspirations to do so again.
In fact, an influx of KTM funding could be just what Guzzi needs to develop a modern sportbike to compete
with the Ducati and MV Agusta models.
