Jeff Emig had minor surgery on his ankle on November 30, 1999, and, although he is quite sore, he expects to be riding and practicing by the end of this upcoming week. He will be ready for the first AMA Supercross in early January, but will miss the Chaparral Supercross “warm up” race in mid-December.
We have additional news that Ernesto Fonseca (Yamaha) did not break any bones at the “Day in the Dirt” race that resulted in serious injuries to KTM rider Donovan Mitchell. This is obviously good news for Fonseca, who needs to be ready to defend his East Coast AMA 125 Championship.
After watching Suzuki’s young star Travis Pastrana at round two of the FIM World Supercross Championship in Pasadena, California a few weeks ago, we are predicting that Pastrana will dethrone Fonseca and win the East Coast 125 Supercross Championship. We know this would be an upset, but Pastrana showed so much poise, and held off Fonseca in both the qualifier and the main (with Fonseca crashing both times while trying to keep pace with Pastrana), we still feel Pastrana will win the Championship.
