Kurtis Roberts Wins Daytona 600 Supersport; Mid-Race Crash Injures Several Riders

Following a horrendous mid-race crash that injured several riders, and a re-start of a ten lap sprint to the finish, Honda’s Kurtis Roberts came out on top at the Daytona 600 Supersport championship race in Daytona, Florida today.

Roughly half way through the race, while the leaders were coming through traffic in the chicane, several riders crashed, with Yamaha’s Jamie Hacking and Honda’s Nicky Hayden among them. After a lengthy delay, and transportation of several riders to a local hospital, the race was re-started as a ten lap sprint.

We do not currently think that any of the riders were seriously injured, but there is a report that Jamie Hacking suffered an injury to his arm which will keep him out of Sunday’s Superbike 200. If we are wrong on this, we will post something tomorrow on the injuries. Nicky Hayden, apparently, is okay.

After the re-start, the Kawasakis of Doug Chandler and Eric Bostrom got out quickly, but were soon caught in a dog fight with the Honda’s of Kurtis Roberts and Miguel Duhamel.

Yamaha’s Tommy Hayden benefitted from the re-start, after running roughly tenth place before the accident.

As is typical during a 600 Supersport race at Daytona, the lead pack involved drafting of one another on the banking, and several lead changes. Kawasaki’s Doug Chandler appeared to be making a break away during the final lap, only to be caught and passed by Roberts before the checkered flag. Chandler finished second, with Honda’s Miguel Duhamel filling out the podium in third. Tommy Hayden finished fourth, with Kawasaki’s Eric Bostrom in fifth.
