In a race that boiled down to a close contest between the two dominant figures in this season’s AMA Superbike championship, Honda’s Nicky Hayden came out on top over Suzuki’s Mat Mladin, tightening the points’ race (still led by Mladin)
Pole sitter John Kocinski (Ducati) led the first several laps before crashing in the corkscrew. This left Hayden and Mladin at the front of the pack, and their close battle continued throughout the remainder of the race.
To Mladin’s credit, he nearly crashed twice going through the corkscrew (including one time when he literally dropped through the corkscrew off the track in the dirt), yet he stayed close enough to pass Hayden twice during the latter stages of the race.
Finishing third was Mladin’s teammate Aaron Yates, with Kawasaki’s Eric Bostrom fourth.
