With freestyle motocross gaining more and more press, and becoming the most popular “extreme” sport, the major factories have sat quietly on the sidelines. Perhaps, worried about injuries to amateur riders who attempt to mimic their heros, none of the factories has officially sponsored a FMX rider or team … until now.

Apparently, Yamaha now has a factory supported FMX rider. His name is Trevor Vines. As far as we know, Mr. Vines is the first, direct, factory supported FMX rider. This is a turning point in this sport, and it will be interesting to see if other major manufacturers join in. Ultimately, if FMX continues its trend towards becoming an extremely influential part of motorcycling for young people (translation: influencing young people to buy bikes — bikes of the brand ridden by their heros), the other factories will likely join in.
