Kawasaki Focuses on Refinement for 2002

2002 Kawasaki ZZ-R1200

Kawasaki has no all-new models in its sportbike line-up for 2002, choosing to carry over the ZX-6R virtually unchanged (except in Europe, where it receives a displacement increase to 636cc), and refine both the ZX-9R and ZX-12R. The ZX-7R is unchanged.

The closest thing to an all-new model in Kawasaki’s street bike line-up (leaving aside the Mean Streak Power Cruiser reviewed earlier by MD) is the ZZ-R1200 sport tourer. The ZZ-R1200 derives many, but not all, of its components from Kawasaki’s existing ZRX1200R and Ninja ZX-11 motorcycles (the ZX-11 is discontinued for 2002). The 1164cc four-cylinder engine plucked from the ZRX1200R is a superb unit (see our review of the ZRX1200R). According to Kawasaki, it has been tweaked for even more low and mid-range power (hard to believe) and has a revised cylinder head and different carburetors. Additionally, the pistons have been altered from the ZRX1200R design. The ZX-11 derived frame has been stiffened with thicker rails and a new steering head, and features a steel subframe to provide the strength necessary to accommodate saddlebags (color matched luggage will be offered by Givi).

Steering geometry changes were made for quicker handling, and the swingarm of the ZZ-R1200 has been lightened and lowered versus the ZX-11 unit.

The ergonomics of the ZZ-R1200 are relaxed versus the ZX-11, with closer bars and lower, more forward footpegs.

2002 ZX-12R

Tweaks and changes to the ZX-9R and ZX-12R are fairly extensive, and affect both engine and handling performance. These will be discussed in a future article. In the meantime, here are some photos, and some very brief comments regarding both models.

2002 ZX-9R

The ZX-9R carries the same displacement, but receives all-new carburetors and a heavier crank to smooth out and beef-up low end and mid-range performance. The ZX-9R also receives some chassis modifications (note the new, reinforced swingarm) to add stiffness, and lighter, four-piston brake calipers in front. The styling of the tail section has also been changed.

2002 ZX-12R

The ZX-12R has a re-designed front fairing section, which provides both better rider protection and smoother aerodynamics. The already-legendary 1199cc engine has received several changes designed to smooth and broaden power delivery. Changes to the steering geometry and steering-head bearings are said to enhance handling and increase road feel through the bars. Like the ZX-9R, the 12R receives revised suspension settings with stepless damping adjustment. More later.
