With World Superbike intending to move to a format permitting 1000cc machines of all engine configurations, including in-line, four-cylinder machines, for the 2004 season (and, perhaps, as early as 2003) expect even more emphasis by manufacturers on development of homologated, open-class sportbikes. Kawasaki, for instance, will finally have to manufacture a new superbike, albeit one displacing 1000cc rather than 750cc. The same goes for the other manufacturers. At present, only Suzuki and, perhaps, Yamaha with its new 2002 R1, have chassis on their four cylinder, open-class production machines sufficient for superbike racing.
