MD previously introduced our readers to Suzuki’s 2002 DL1000 V-Strom “sport enduro tourer” a few months ago. The V-Strom fits into a category of machine popular in Europe — the large displacement dual-sport or enduro category populated by bikes such as Triumph’s Tiger and BMW’s R1150GS. These machines, sporting 19-inch front wheels, upright riding positions, long-travel suspension and decent wind protection, are popular commuters in Europe. The category has been largely dead in the U.S., however, with the relatively expensive Triumph and BMW selling in very small numbers here.
The Suzuki is dramatically less expensive than the competion at an U.S. MSRP of $8,899. Until now, the Japanese have virtually ignored this market in the U.S., with Honda keeping its Varadero off-shore.
With Europeans enjoying these bikes so much, perhaps Suzuki is on to something. At this price point, the V-Strom might surprise industry observers and consumers alike. We are looking forward to testing the V-Strom early next year.
