After a horrible start to their motorcycle manufacturing business, which included scathing reviews for their 400cc motocrosser, word is that Cannondale is introducing a dramatically improved group of off-road bikes beginning this month, designated the X440, E440 and C440.
An interim release from Cannondale, the X440S, did poorly in the recent Cycle News four-stroke shoot-out, but informal reviews by customers (posted on the Internet and elsewhere) for this machine are very positive. Suspension and handling, for instance, are considered at least as good as, or better than, Honda’s CRF450R, and engine performance is dramatically improved over the original machine.
Cannondale has increased the engine capacity to 432cc, and significantly improved its breathing by re-designing an airbox located conventionally under the seat (Cannondale has done away with the air filter and intake behind the front number plate). Cannondale was smart enough to go outside the company for help in tuning its sophisticated fuel injection system and Ohlins suspension. Pro Action is providing the suspension settings for the production Cannondales.
We hope to get a test ride before too long, and we will bring you a full report.
