Carmichael (250) and Reed (125) Win at Daytona Supercross; Vuillemin DNS and Loses Points Lead

The AMA Supercross series visited Daytona Beach, Florida today. In the 250 class, points leader David Vuillemin did not start the race as a result of the shoulder injury suffered last Saturday in a photo shoot with TransWorld Motocross Magazine. MD reported on this incident, but the effects of the crash were not fully appreciated by a Yamaha press representative when interviewed by MD on Monday, March 4, 2002. Obviously, Vuillemin was hurt worse than Yamaha believed at that point.

In any event, Ricky Carmichael stormed to his fifth victory this season, and third straight Daytona victory. Early in the 250 main, Carmichael was followed closely by Suzuki’s Travis Pastrana before Pastrana retired from the race due to an apparent onset of heat exhaustion. Yamaha’s Tim Ferry finished second, with Kawasaki’s Ezra Lusk third.

Carmichael now takes the points lead in the 250 class from Vuillemin.

In the 125 class, Yamaha’s Chad Reed continued to dominate the East 125 series with his fourth straight victory. Finishing second was Kawasaki’s Mike Brown. KTM’s Grant Langston finished third.
