On a gloomy, drizzly Saturday in Fontana, California, Yamaha’s Anthony Gobert emerged victorious over the Suzuki of Aaron Yates in a close-fought 28 lap AMA Superbike race. Although defending series champion Mat Mladin (Suzuki) initially looked strong and took the early lead, he faded to finish in sixth place.
Gobert, Yates and Nicky Hayden (Honda) quickly distanced themselves from the rest of the field (with the exception of Doug Chandler, who kept his Ducati fairly close while finishing in fourth place), and those three made up the podium.
Tomorrow is Race Two of the Superbike double-header at Fontana.
