Kawasaki’s Eric Bostrom came back from an engine failure yesterday to win Race 2 at Virginia International Raceway today — the final race of the 2002 AMA/Chevy Trucks Superbike championship. Although Honda’s Nicky Hayden had clinched the championship yesterday, Bostrom rode hard and, despite numerous restarts (there were three separate red flags today), emerged with the victory over Yoshimura Suzuki’s Mat Mladin by just 4/1000ths of a second (a photo finish).
Finishing third was Mladin’s teammate, Aaron Yates. Yates may be headed for some sort of fine/sanction from AMA Pro Racing officials after an outrageous incident that led to the second red flag. After avoiding a crashing Kurtis Roberts (Honda) and crashing himself off the race track, Yates ran back on to the race track and laid in the middle of the track. Although the race undoubtedly would have been red flagged, because Roberts’ bike lay on the track, and shortly thereafter burst into flames, it is hard to find an excuse for Yate’s conduct.
