As the MotoGP roadrace series begins this weekend with perhaps the greatest collection of talent ever assembled in one roadracing series, something similar is happening in the motocross world. The FIM Motocross GP 250 class this year permits four-strokes displacing 450cc, and has drawn the entry of KTM’s Joel Smets and Yamaha’s Stefan Everts, both multi-time World champions (Everts has more championships than anyone in history). They come from the open class to contest the 250 class aboard 450 four-strokes, and challenge Suzuki’s Mickael Pichon (aboard a 250 two-stroke), who has been dominating the 250 GP series since leaving the United States AMA series several years ago.
Everts is considered by many to be the greatest Motocross GP racer of all time, but he could only manage third place behind Pichon and Smets during the first round held in Spain last weekend. This battle of titans will continue through the lengthy Motocross GP championship series (where Smets is competing in both the 650 and 250 classes) to the utter delight of Motocross GP fans everywhere. In the end, perhaps, we will have a better idea of where these three riders should rank in motocross GP history.
