Honda’s Ricky Carmichael, the defending AMA/Chevy Trucks U.S. Motocross championship series champion, swept both motos during the opening round of the 2003 series at Glen Helen yesterday. Chad Reed (Yamaha) made his Outdoor 250 debut in fine style, finishing second overall on the day (2/3), while his teammate Tim Ferry finished third (3/5).
Kevin Windham (Honda) looked like he might take the win in the opening moto, as he built a sizeable lead over Carmichael after the first several laps, but Windham crashed and eventually finished fourteenth. Windham was uninjured, and returned to finish second in the final moto of the day.
The 125 class saw a renewed battle between the contestants for the 2001 125 Outdoor title, Mike Brown (Kawasaki – he won the championship that year) and Grant Langston (KTM – he finished a close second to Brown in 2001), with Brown taking the overall (1/2) and Langston second (3/1). Langston’s teammate Ryan Hughes finished third (4/3).
