The AMA Red Bull Supermoto Championship kicks off this weekend at Laguna Seca in conjunction with both AMA and World Superbike racing, and boy is it a mix-up. Looking at the pre-entry list, I pulled a few notable names from each racing discipline represented to give an idea of the wide range of styles that will be lined up for the Red Bull Supermoto class final:
MX: Michael Brandes, Micky Dymond (former AMA 125cc National Champion), Danny LaPorte (former World MX Champion), Phil Lawrence, Jeremy McGrath (8-time AMA SX champion), Kurt Nicoll, Jeff Ward (7-time AMA National Champion)
Roadracers: Larry Pegram, David Sadowski, Kevin Schwantz (former 500GP World Champion)
Dirt Track: Chris Carr (multi-time AMA dirt track champion), Ben Carlson, Joe Kopp
Freestyle: Kenny Bartram, Mike Metzger, Mike Cinqmars
Misc: Klaus Kinigadner (European Supermoto pro), Shaun Palmer (Extreme Athlete)
So who will come out on top? Smart money is supposed to be on an MX’er, but I personally feel that the Godfather might have a few surprises up his sleeve come Sunday. That is of course assuming that Kinigadner doesn’t smoke everybody. I guess we’ll see.
