As we have previously noted, the big four-strokes (now displacing 450cc) have not been favored as supercross weapons. Kevin Windham hopes to change that perception this year while riding the Honda CRF450R in the AMA Supercross series. According to statements made by Windham, his lap times at the Honda supercross test track are at least as quick as Ricky Carmichael’s, and, perhaps, even quicker.
Moreover, some of the track designs disclosed for next year’s supercross series indicate start straights may be longer than usual. Could Windham ever fail to get a top three start on the factory Honda 450? He grabbed a lot of holeshots in the outdoor series this year, and should be starting up front just about every week in supercross, as well. This could be the year that the 450cc four-stroke proves itself capable of consistent AMA supercross podiums.
