It is no secret that motorcycle road racing is more popular in Europe than it is in the United States. AMA road racing is great racing, with a high level of talent and a high level of factory commitment, but it doesn’t draw many fans (relative to other big-time sports here in the US).
Basketball legend Michael Jordan might help change that. A motorcycle enthusiast who has sponsored road racers in the past, Jordan is rumored to be interested in sponsoring an AMA superbike team with big-name riders for 2005. Jordan is still popular enough here in the US to draw press attention no matter what he does, and bringing main stream sports press attention to AMA road racing always helps. Jordan’s millions of fans might be interested in attending a race, when they otherwise would never get near a motorcycle road race.
With motoGP coming to the US in 2005, Jordan’s participation in American road racing is just an added boost to the publicity motorcycle road racing will receive here in the US next year.
