In the last few years, cruisers have been the hottest segment of a growing motorcycle market, and cruiser sales continue to increase. The question that comes to mind when reviewing the current crop of bikes is this: where do cruisers go from here?
In the last fews years, two trends have emerged: the “sport cruiser” category, and the move towards maximum displacement engines for premium cruisers.
Entries in the sport cruiser category range from entirely redesigned machines with better-handling chassis and more powerful engines, to mildly restyled versions of existing models. Manufacturers are likely to continue to develop new, sportier sport-cruisers in the coming years.
The maximum displacement trend, exemplified by Kawasaki’s powerful Vulcan 2000, will probably continue until other manufacturers have matched Kawasaki’s nearly 2100cc V-Twin. After that, it is questionable how much bigger a V-Twin engine can be made.
