If anything can derail the Ricky Carmichael freight train, it could be another muddy supercross race this Saturday evening in Southern California. Tomorrow’s practice has already been cancelled in anticipation of wet weather, and Saturday’s weather report doesn’t look much better (although it could clear up by race time).
Although Carmichael is an excellent mud rider (as he proved at the opening round in Anaheim this year — where he finished third), mud races lead to lots of crashes and mechanical DNFs. With a sizeable point lead to protect (32 points), Suzuki and Carmichael would rather avoid racing in the mud at this point. A DNF for Carmichael could put Yamaha’s Chad Reed back in the hunt for the title.
