Chad Reed (Yamaha) took an upset win at tonight’s Daytona Supercross, leading the 250cc race from flag to flag to defeat rival Ricky Carmichael (Suzuki). Daytona is well-known to be one of Carmichael’s favorite SX races, and he was widely expected to dominate tonight’s race. Instead, it was Chad Reed who got the holeshot and was able to hold off Carmichael on the rough infield track, gaining a nearly 3-second lead over the Suzuki rider before Ricky crashed in the whoops 3 laps from the finish. Carmichael was able to recover to take second, and third went to veteran Honda rider Mike Larocco.
The 125cc class featured equally unexpected results, as pre-race favorites Davi Millsaps (Suzuki), Grant Langston (Kawasaki), and Matt Walker (Kawasaki) all managed to crash themselves out of contention for the podium. The battle for the lead came down to Josh Hansen (KTM) and Josh Grant (Honda), with Hansen taking the win and Grant second. Third place went to Troy Adams (Honda).
Carmichael still holds a significant lead in the 250cc championship points, while Josh Hansen’s win tonight puts him first in the 125cc East points race – just two points ahead of Grant Langston.
