BMW has released details of its new off-road model, the HP2, and it looks like they’ve really gone all-out to make this a real, competitive off-road bike in the same class as KTM’s Adventure. BMW states that the design targets for the HP2 were light weight, excellent handling, low center of gravity, and excellent off-road capability.
The HP2 is loosely based on the existing R1200GS model, and uses a slightly uprated version of that bike’s 1170cc boxer flat-twin engine. This motor should provide excellent performance when combined with the HP2’s claimed 386lb dry weight (claimed 430lb wet).
BMW plans to demonstrate the HP2’s off-road prowess through competition in a number of off-road venues throughout the world, including the SCORE Baja 500 and Baja 1000. The HP2 should reach dealerships in Autumn 2005.
