Valentino Rossi (Yamaha) took the win at today’s inaugural Chinese Grand Prix at Shanghai International Circuit. Rossi passed early leader Kenny Roberts Jr. (Suzuki) after Roberts suffered from a mechanical problem, and led the rest of the race to win by a 1.7 second margin.
The big surprise of the day came from Olivier Jacque, who was riding the Kawasaki belonging to an injured Alex Hoffman. Jacque charged through the pack, passing Sete Gibernau for second with seven laps remaining and making a valiant attempt to chase down Rossi. Gibernau was passed again on the last lap by Marco Melandri (Honda), who took third place.
