A four-way Italian battle for victory at Mugello resulted in points leader Valentino Rossi (Yamaha) taking the win ahead of arch rival Max Biaggi (Honda) in second and Loris Capirossi (Ducati) in third. Marco Melandri (Honda) finished a close fourth. Melandri’s teammate Sete Gibernau crashed out of the race, unhurt.
