After a crash involving Valentino Rossi (Yamaha) and Marco Melandri (Honda) took both riders into the gravel trap, Ducati scored its first MotoGP win since 2003 with Loris Capirossi aboard. Capirossi was able to pass Max Biaggi (Honda) late in the race and pull away to a comfortable gap at the flag. Biaggi finished second, with Makoto Tamota (Honda) third.
