With James Stewart and Ricky Carmichael getting most of the press and the hype, after two races Chad Reed sits quietly just one point behind his fellow superstars in the AMA Supercross championship (Stewart and Carmichael are tied for first in the championship). You may recall that Reed was terribly off the pace during the two Canadian Supercross rounds held in December. He not only is back on the pace, he would have won in Phoenix last night except for a couple of untimely mistakes.
Indeed, Stewart, Carmichael and Reed all ran roughly the same pace last night, while Carmichael made the fewest mistakes and took the win. Stewart did show the patience we recently spoke of, and worked his way into third place after a first corner crash. All three of these riders have comparable speed at the moment, and the maturity to take a podium spot (with an eye on the title at the end of the year) rather than risk too much going for the win after a bad start.
