We don’t cover AMA Supersport racing on a regular basis. This year’s Supersport series is particularly newsworthy, however, given the total domination by Yamaha rider Jamie Hacking aboard his R6 (winner of MD’s Supersport Shootout). Hacking has six wins in a row following this weekend’s VIR round, and two second place finishes. As far as we know, no AMA Supersport rider has dominated this series quite like Hacking since Honda’s Miguel Duhamel in the mid-1990s.
Supersport is traditionally the most competitive series in AMA roadracing. In recent years, however, Honda has pulled its factory riders from this championship. Nevertheless, Hacking withstood factory efforts by Kawasaki and Suzuki this year.
Hacking also leads the Superstock series aboard his R1. He is a past Supersport champion (2003).
Yamaha is not racing in AMA Superbike this year, but is rumored to be readying an effort for the 2007 Superbike series with an all-new R1.
