One Supercross race down, three riders injured. That’s the story after Toronto’s World Supercross GP last Saturday evening.
James Stewart (Kawasaki) and Ivan Tedesco (Suzuki) came together during practice, with Tedesco suffering a hand or wrist injury (no confirmation on exactly what the injury entails at this point). In the main event, on lap 17, Stewart went off the track, and re-entered on the landing of the huge finish line jump where he was t-boned by Travis Preston (Honda). The resulting impact injured Stewart’s right leg or ankle (again, no confirmation on the extent of the injury at this point), while Preston seems to be battered and bruised, but expecting to race the next round.
Both Tedesco and Preston have reportedly protested James Stewart’s riding to the FIM — the International sanctioning body that oversaw the Toronto race.
When Stewart re-entered the track in the landing zone of the finish line jump, he pretty clearly (from video tape we have seen) was at fault. We do not know what happened during practice between Stewart and Tedesco.
Stewart and Tedesco were both expected to be frequent podium visitors (with Stewart often at the top of the podium). We hope the injuries are not serious, but Toronto may have dramatically changed this year’s World Supercross GP series and AMA Supercross series.
