Ricky Carmichael (Suzuki) temporarily derailed the James Stewart (Kawasaki) express at tonight’s AMA Supercross race in San Francisco, California, in a battle that saw the two top riders, along with Yamaha’s Chad Reed, each take their turns in the lead. Reed and Stewart both fell back due to mistakes, however, leaving Ricky alone out front to take the win nearly 5 seconds ahead of Stewart, with Reed a further 9.5 seconds back in third.
In the Lites class, Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto continued his string of dominant performances, taking his third victory of a season only four races old. Honda’s Josh Grant crossed the finish line nearly 7 seconds behind in second place, followed by Jake Weimer (Honda) in third.
Villopoto is, of course, dominating the Lites class championship points standings, with 97 points to second-place Jason Lawrence’s 71. In the premier Supercross class, Stewart slightly extended his lead over second-place Chad Reed – Stewart now holds 97 points to Reed’s 82.
