Former MotoGP star Max Biaggi (Suzuki) took the win today in his first ever WSB start, in Race One of the season opener in Qatar. Biaggi finished over a second ahead of second-place James Toseland (Honda), with Lorenzo Lanzi (Ducati) another 12.5 seconds back.
Toseland struck back in Race Two, taking the lead early and opening up a small gap as Biaggi fought his way forward from fourth place. Despite a valiant effort, Biaggi crossed the finish line .7 seconds behind Toseland in second place. Troy Corser (Yamaha) finished a distant third, 7.3 seconds back.
With Biaggi and Toseland each taking a first and a second, they leave the opening round tied for the championship points lead.
