It was great watching Ricky Carmichael ride all those years, but a close-fought AMA Motocross championship series is something that seems entirely new at the moment. Going into the final round of the series at Glen Helen tomorrow, Grant Langston (Yamaha) has a slim eight point lead over Andrew Short (Honda), and just 13 points and 15 points over Tim Ferry (Kawasaki) and Mike Alessi (KTM), respectively.
Fifty points are on the table in the two motos tomorrow, and anything can happen in this sport. Any one of these four guys could take the title . . . and that is pretty special in itself.
By the way, there is the potential for some drama in the Lites division, but Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto has stretched his points lead over teammate Ben Townley to 19, and should not have much trouble gaining his second consecutive Lites championship tomorrow.
