If Yamaha’s Chad Reed is to win his second AMA Supercross title, he must maintain his points lead (now at 13 points) over Honda’s Kevin Windham with two rounds remaining in the series. With a nagging shoulder injury suffered a few weeks ago, and several riders having upped their game (not just Windham), Reed needs to be both conservative and fast in the last two races.
Let’s look at the numbers. A Supercross main event win is worth 25 points, second place gets 22, third place gets 20, and fourth place gets 18. If Kevin Windham were to win each of the remaining races, Reed could still take the title by finishing third in one of those races and fourth in the other. Under normal circumstances, Reed could crash in the first corner of each race and easily achieve those results. In his most recent race Reed finished second to Windham, but posted some good lap times. It looks like he controls his own fate.
