As the AMA Toyota Motocross Championship series kicks off this weekend in Southern California, the Glen Helen track offers its traditional challenge to the riders. This track is incredibly difficult and draining. A huge amount of sand has been brought in this year. Several portions of the track will transition from silty hard-pack to deep sand and, given the weather the last few days, mud. The sand whoop section will be long and intended to challenge the famous whoop section at Millville.
For riders nursing sore knees and ankles (James Stewart and Ben Townley, for instance), this will be a rude wake awakening, indeed! There has been some heavy rain in So Cal the last few days, but it looks like the track will dry out nicely for tomorrow’s racing. Portions of the track will undoubtedly be muddy, however, and this simply adds to the incredible variety that the Glen Helen track throws at the riders each year.
