Harley-Davidson announced on Monday that President and CEO James L. Ziemer plans to retire in 2009, ending a three-year run as CEO and a 40-year career with The Motor Company. His long career with H-D was spent mostly in the accounting department, moving up through the ranks from freight-elevator operator to Chief Financial Officer to CEO in 2005.
Ziemer took over the job from Jeff Bleustein, one of the original executives who bought the company back from bowling-ball manufacturer AMF in 1981. Bleustein was CEO for eight years. Zeimer is relatively young, at 57, but there is no indication his departure relates to performance. H-D’s sales and profits have started to slip for the first time in two decades.
