A great race at Mugello today saw defending champion Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha) hunt down early race leader Casey Stoner (Honda) to take the win ahead of Andrea Dovizioso (Honda) second and Stoner in third. Ben Spies (Yamaha) fought long and hard with Marco Simoncelli (Honda) over fourth place with Spies nipping Simoncelli at the line. After a big gap behind Simoncelli, Valentino Rossi (Ducati) came home in sixth position.
Stoner continues to lead the championship series points. For additional details, results and points, visit the official MotoGP site here.
there’s an article by James Parker in the August 2011 issue of MotorCyclist magazine (pg32) about upcoming changes to Moto GP…. 1 is the change from 2 stroke 125’s to 4 stroke 250’s.. this will be Moto Gp 3. We already know about the change from 2 stroke 250’s to 4 stroke 600’s.. Moto Gp 2. The article notes the huge difference in number of bikes in Moto Gp 2 vs Moto Gp… there are only 17 bikes in Moto Gp with only 4 manufacturers….
Moto Gp is going to 1000cc engines next year & is also going to create a new class within that group that will allow production engines with prototype frames to run in an effort to reduce costs & gain more interest (riders/bikes).
Lots of changes coming down the road… hope they don’t ruin it. I really liked the 250 2 strokes!… I like the closeness of the 600’s in Moto Gp 2 but there are clearly (IMO) too many bikes on the track at 1 time….
re: “but there are clearly (IMO) too many bikes on the track at 1 time…. ”
just so you’re aware, the current complaint in motogp is that there AREN’T enough bikes on track. hoping you can see the “disconnect”…? the irony…?
The Yammies 2 wins in a row – Stoner had the early running but the quality of the Yamahas is shining through now.
The announcerr had all but crowned Stoner the winner, but I had a sneaky feeling that Lorenzo would come back. He is the smoothest rider out there, by a large margin, and on a hot day, that’s a big advantage. Smooth saves tires. Stoner went out like a jack rabbit, and paid the price with slick tires at the end of the race.
I’m not a big Lorenzo fan, but he is something very special. He was the first guy to come along who didn’t let Rossi rattle him, and his riding style is second to none. He is clearly the best rider on the circuit right now.
It looks to me like the Yamahas have made up a lot of top end speed on the Hondas in recent weeks. I really thought Stoner would run away with the title, but with the gains the Yamahas have made, there’s going to be a dog fight. Stoner is great, but Lorenzo is on the man right now.
I agree. Love Lorenzo’s smooth riding style. No legs dangling. Smooth movements
