PICKERINGTON, Ohio — Racers at the 2015 Pikes Peak International Hillclimb, an AMA-sanctioned competition event, on June 28 in Colorado Springs, Colo., will be protected by soft-barrier deployment, thanks to Honda Research and Development Americas and the Roadracing World Action Fund.
“Thanks to a financial contribution from Honda Research and Development Americas, we’re able to fund deployment of soft barriers from the Roadracing World Action Fund at the 93rd running of the Pikes Peak International Hillclimb,” said AMA Director of Racing Bill Cumbow. “AMA-sanctioned events strive to put safety first, and Roadracing World Action Fund’s soft barriers can help reduce rider injuries in the event of a crash.”
The Pikes Peak International Hillclimb is one of the oldest motorsports events in the world. Known as “The Race to the Clouds,” the first running was in 1916. The race is run on a 12.42-mile course with 156 turns. It begins at 9,390 feet and finishes at the 14,115-foot summit of Pikes Peak. The motorcycle portion of the competition is AMA-sanctioned.
The Roadracing World Action Fund, a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charitable organization with a mission to help reduce rider injuries, provides soft barriers deployed at road race and dirt-track events. The inflated barriers are positioned in front of walls and other trackside obstacles and work like airbags to reduce the force of impact in the event of a rider crash.
The Roadracing World Action Fund was founded in 2001 by racer, team owner, publisher and former AMA board member John Ulrich and to date has raised more than $1.3 million to deploy soft barriers at sanctioned events nationwide.
