Checking in on FMX: A Double Front Flip?

071816top-i

We don’t give freestyle motocross much coverage here (essentially none, actually), but when we saw this video in our inbox this morning we thought we should pass it along. At the Nitro World Games last week, some amazing tricks were performed — apparently, displaying the state-of-the-art in freestyle MX. The video below switches to BMX roughly 1/2 way through (so skip that if you wish), but the motorcycle tricks at the beginning might be worth a look, particularly, the double front flip performed by Gregg Duffy.

not on your life, I was just riding my PK (fat) Ripper this morning. wow, they’ve got more air fence than some rounds of MotoAmerica.

I think all those were darn good. I wish the camera angle was higher so I could see the stunt in the air plus the landing though.

  3. Tom says:

    Something to flip out over.

Where and how do you train for this? I assume they don’t just go out there and land on their head the first few hundred times, until they get the speed just right. Amazing!

    • Jeremy in TX says:

Lol. Actually, that is exactly what most of them do when starting out. The wealthier and/or sponsored riders have these giant foam block pits that they land in when working on new tricks. But ultimately, they all end up having to train with solid ground beneath them.

    • Norm G. says:

Q: Where and how do you train for this?

      A: Travis Pastrana’s backyard.

That is just nuts. I remember when a simple cross-up was trick lol

and Dirck, I think you meant BMX not BMW. Then again anyone that could do that on a GS1200 would be a super hero lol

Oh my achin’ neck..spine..whole body cast!

    • xLaYN says:

Outside of the helmet seems like there is no more protection.
Reminds me the cyclists who go 40+mph on lycra…

  7. Jeremy in TX says:

I lost the balls the try that kind of stuff around the age of 25. Not that I could have ever approached even a fraction of the skill level these guys demonstrated.

  8. Dave says:

Why is this called freestyle motocross? It has nothing to do with motocross except the type of motorcycle. It is really just showing off.

    • Chris says:

If you had that ability/agility you’d show off too, Dave. So would I.

      • Dave says:

I agree it takes talent. I also think it can be entertaining but I just do not why they call motocross.

        • joe b says:

That’s the origin of this style of riding, and the stunts that were originally performed there. Why do we call it thanksgiving, and Christmas?

        • Chris says:

Okay, I see what you mean, Dave. It branched off motocross, but is no longer motocross. I buy that.

    • notarollingroadblock says:

I always figured these are the guys who love dirt bikes but are bored with motocross, or lacked the ability to remain focused for the length of a moto.

      • joe b says:

Watching motorcycle stunts go from simply jumps, to more than just a jump, its not everyone has the talent for this. Some people have the talent to go fast. Some of those who can go fast, don’t have the talent for stunting, that these do. One time in my life, I gaged everyone I met on their chess skills. As I grew up, I realized, some people have skills that others don’t, and I should not judge them, all by my own criteria, of what’s talented, good or bad. So out of the hundred or so talents motorcycle related, how many do you have?

        • notarollingroadblock says:

3.5? Chess skills: near zero. I wasn’t dissing anyone. I should have said “…lacked the INTEREST to remain focused…”. Same as being bored, I guess.

    • WJF says:

I think freestyle Harley would be sick

    • Mark says:

      Just showing off?!
Really. And what do you call racing?
And you don’t see the connection to motocross with the same machines, ridden on dirt, with the same gear, but a different style of riding?
Have the kids been on your yard again Dave?
