This Week in Monster Energy Supercross: Round 16 in East Rutherford, NJ

450SX Class

  • Making a Statement: Eli Tomac enjoyed his most resilient outing of the 2017 season en route to victory in Salt Lake City, passing nine riders in the Main Event to climb from 10th to first. It was the worst start in a winning effort of Tomac’s career, which previously came this season in Oakland when he started eighth.
  • The Run Continues: With his seventh win over the past nine races Tomac continued a incredible run in which he has earned 219 out of a possible 225 points. It’s the most dominant nine-race stretch since Ryan Villopoto ended the 2013 season with the exact same point total.
  • Uncharted Territory: Tomac’s ninth win of the 2017 season also gave him sole possession of the championship points lead for the first time in his career. He holds a three-point lead over Ryan Dungey with two races remaining.
  • An Unfamiliar Position: This is the latest Dungey has lost the points lead in his career, which has happened just once previously in 2012. The 29-point lead he gave up is also the most of his career. Dungey still remains the most statistically consistent rider in the championship this season, but has just two wins to highlight his 12 podiums.

Western Regional 250SX Class

  • A New Champion: Justin Hill capped off an incredibly consistent 2017 season by clinching the Western Regional Championship one round early. With four wins and seven podiums, he became the 52nd different 250SX Class Regional Champion in supercross history.
  • Adding to a Legacy: Hill also gave Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki its landmark 20th division title, ending a five-year championship drought for the team that dates back to 2011. The Kawasaki squad is the most successful team in supercross history.
  • TLD Emerges: Troy Lee Designs/Red Bull/KTM recorded its first ever 1-2 finish in Salt Lake City with Shane McElrath and Mitchell Oldenburg, continuing a breakout season for the team that has also seen all four of its riders finish with a podium result for the first time.
  • What Could Have Been: In just three starts this season Mitchell Oldenburg has finishes of 4-3-2 and has improved from his starting spot by an average of 3.3 positions in those races. Oldenburg missed five rounds due to injury, but still sits in the top-10 in the championship standings.
