Championship points leader Marc Marquez (Honda) took pole position today during qualifying for tomorrow’s Austrian MotoGP race. In the process, Marquez broke the all-time MotoGP pole position record with his 59th pole – breaking the record previously set by another Honda rider, Mick Doohan.
Marquez also broke the lap record for the Red Bull Ring, besting second quickest Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha) by nearly half a second. Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso qualified third.
Take a look here for full qualifying results. Stay tuned for race coverage on MD tomorrow.

Great race between Dovi & king Marquez ,was sitting on the edge of my seat shouting like a baby .Hope in 2020 Quatararo get’s a factory ride ,whether it be yamaha ,ducati or honda ,presently he is the only young rookie showing great potential and given the right equipt would definitely be giving Marquez a run for his money ,Jack Miller shows poential but always seems to end up in the gravel trap when the going gets hot ,Lorenzo has lost his mojo and trying desperate measures to try and get back to his former glory ,one step forward and three backward
When Doohan set his time, what were the differences between then and now, besides the bikes? I can’t see how it would be possible for a 500cc 2T to go anywhere near as fast as a current GP bike on the same track.
All it took was nearly two decades of development, twice the engine displacement, and a big fat electronic package for the holy deisel to prevail.
Tell me again why I am suposed to care about DeiselGP.
Never mind. You’ll never succeed.
The 500cc bikes lapped about 6+ seconds slower than today’s GP bikes which puts them on par with today’s Moto2 field.
The broken record in question is not Doohan’s lap time, though, but the number of career pole positions in the premier class.
Looking at the pic at the top of the page guess the Frenchman doesnt have an energy drink sponsor to collect residuals from. That will probably change soon.
I wonder what Simoncelli would be like if he was still with us.
We’re witnessing one of the finest riders of all time with Marquez. Enjoy the show is all I can say. And yea..the Honda RC213V is pretty darn good too.
It wasn’t an easy pole. Quatararo, Dovisioso and Vinales all pushed him. Funny he said he was going for a 1:22 lap time which also would have been a first for the circuit but he missed it by a tenth of a second or so due to running wide at one corner.
The kid has mad skills
