Jorge Martin’s luck, along with that of his employer Aprilia, has gone from bad to worse. Already recovering from hand and foot injuries suffered during pre-season testing, Martin was expected to participate in the opening round this weekend in Thailand. That won’t be happening, now.
Martin has now suffered new, complex injuries as the result of an accident he suffered while training on a supermoto bike in Spain. The press release below somewhat vaguely describes his injuries. MD now understands that he has damaged his left wrist, broken bones in his right hand and fractured his left heel.
Here is the press release from Aprilia Racing.
Noale, 24 February 2025 –
Jorge Martin suffered a complex fracture of the radius, some carpal bones on the left side and an ipsilateral calcaneal fracture during a training session.
After a surgical consultation, it was decided to proceed with surgery, which will take place tomorrow at the Dexeus Clinic in Barcelona to stabilize the fractures of the radius and the left scaphoid.
Martin will miss the Thailand Grand Prix and recovery times will be determined after the surgery. Lorenzo Savadori will replace Martin in Thailand.
Man are there a lot of news outlets really losing their minds over this. Motorcycle racers occasionally get hurt. That’s racing. Oddly enough, I broke my right scaphoid bone once. I did it skateboarding. But I have broken plenty of other bones during my motorcycle racing exploits. Mostly toes and collar bones, the normal stuff.
Did you get a look at the track that he got injured on? That is a cool racetrack. Ain’t no waiting around for the next corner on that baby. It serves them up tight and often. When you leave there, you’ve been practicing daddy. If you’re going to crash, at least you’re going to crash with a big smile on your face at that place.
Poor guy. Wins the championship and gets cut from the team. Gets new bike. A Bonecrusher 1000. Watch him get a sweet new girlfriend who dumps him just as he’s really falling in love. Then his house burns down, his mountain bike bends a rim way out in the sticks, he runs out of sun screen, his favorite ski handle breaks, some idiot parks on his surfboard, his cleaning lady throws out all his condoms…
Could be worse, however one never knows how severe damage will heal or not. It certainly should affect some thought whether the cause was worth it.
Speed is good, racing is for a moment. Only a moment.
Those guys train with supermoto and dirt track bikes. Unfortunately you can get hurt doing that stuff too.
Wrong.
Martin didn’t get cut from the team, he quit the team and it was the dumbest thing I’ve ever known any rider to do in motogp.
Riders normally make backward career steps to second tier bikes as they age out and/or just aren’t good enough to earn top tier privileges.
He chose to leave the best bike on the paddock to a ride a second tier bike.
Before his crash in 2025 testing Martin stated his focus was not on winning a championship on 2025…well no kidding!!!
He knows as well as anyone else that his ridiculous decision to leave Ducati means he’s never going to win another championship.
I’d wager that if Martin has no plans/prospects of getting back on a Ducati, and quickly, then he will want to get the hell out of racing…period… as his days are going to be nothing more than an embarrassing continuation and proof of the dumbest career decision of his life. Injuring himself while testing and practicing relieves himself the task of competing on the track against MM and not even being good enough to eat MM’s dust.
Alex Marquez on his (non-factory Ducati seat which no doubt Martin could have also had) 2024 is already impressing in 2025. It appears that it’ll be AM that will be MM’s biggest competition. That should/would have been JM if he want an idiot.
The Aprilia MotoGP bike looks good. Assuming a healthy Martin would have been faster than rookie Ogura at Buriram last weekend, he likely would have beaten Bagnaia in his first race on the Aprilia.
very plausible or Pecco may then have been ‘motivated’ more to try harder to stay in front of JM and his new Aprilia.
we’ll see.
JM has talent that’s for sure but now he’s in the position that MM was in for so many years of having to push a second tier bike harder than it’s safe to do so for points.
to early to know but it looks like A Marquez, on his 2024 Duc, may be the first unofficial ‘team mate’ who may be of any use to MM on his 2024 Duc.
JM surely could have been riding on a 2024 Duc too if he wanted.
Jorge’s choice was far more pragmatic than that. After he was passed over for Marquez he realized he could continue to take a 2nd tier salary as champion or earn a champion’s salary on a 2nd tier bike. Knowing full well how risky and short a MotoGP career is, he took the money. Smart.
I don’t understand this.
you are saying JM’s decision to move from a top tier bike to a second tier bike was a (smart) financial decision.
MotoGP careers are short?
Rossi’s MotoGP career was 26 years.
Marquez is in his 12th year.
Pecco began in 2019.
Martin began in 2021.
I’d guess JM (if he wants) is likely to be competing in MotoGP after MM and Pecco are retired.
I’m sure it is safe to say that JM would have earned far more money as a Champion than as a contender.
I’d have to wager that JM’s chances of being a Champ (and earning the highest pay) in upcoming years are far better on a Ducati than any other brand.
it was JM’s ego that led him astray. an emotional based and very poor decision.
i don’t know how long JM’s “multi-year” contract with Aprilia is but I wager if/when JM finishes out of the top 3-5 for these next “2-3?” seasons and when his contract expires…his next contract (with whomever) will surely not be at the same pay, it will be substantially lower.
if JM does cut his career short than it’ll surely be due to the fact that he and his ego was too; tired/frustrated/ill-equipped/injured to continue to ride a second tier bike to lack luster finishes. just like MM did for 10 years (but won 4 more titles) and now through perseverance is able to show what a; worn out, over the hill, too old, crash monster criminal, career over rider can do.
JM is at Pecco’s level. JM won 2024 because he was hungrier than Pecco (Pecco having already 2 titles).
*in 2024, JM and Pecco both knew 2025 and 2026 were going to be MM’s years and Martin knew 2024 was his last chance to win a title before MM took over. JM skill is at Pecco’s level. MM’s is clearly on a higher level than Peccos and JM (watching the first two races of 2025) can plainly see this and knows he is cooked too. JM will not even be on a top tier bike. JM has an out as he can blame his failings on injuries and a second tier bike.
i’ve heard Pecco sincerely give credit/praise to MM many times since 2019. Pecco stated last year (once he knew MM was getting a top tier bike) that the title in 2024 didn’t mean much because it was going to be 2025, when MM is on a top tier bike, that the people want to see (how good Pecco and JM are).
it’s funny, all the times Pecco cordially and sincerely praised MM while JM and his ego simply refused to and dismissed MM.
it plausable to me that JM and his ego is so deluded that he actually tries to convince himself that he is a more talented rider than MM.
i only seen JM give MM credit once or twice in 2024 (when MM, on a second tier bike, spanked him) and only did so begrudgingly.
Well…it’s two races into 2025 and we are seeing what level MM and Pecco (and JM, by proxy) are aren’t we.?.
-Poor guy. Wins the championship and gets cut from the team.-
well, I know you must be joking but for those who don’t…
JM ‘quit’ Ducati and was not cut by Ducati.
as is currently happening and as what ‘everyone’ knew would happen including JM…MM is easily having it in 2025 on a top tier bike (easy pole, easy sprint, and easy Race victory…easy perfect weekend).
Pecco just stated that MM is playing with everyone. Pecco also stated that he can only hope to salvage points at the next two events.
I would wager that JM is, so far, feeling very relieved NOT to be competing (being embarrassed of and proven of his gigantic blunder in leaving Ducati) against with MM on a top tier bike.
Not really a fan of Martin, but that does suck. I wanted to see what he could do on the Aprilia.
