What do you do if you’re arguably the most-accomplished auto racer ever, a billionaire and perhaps one of the most recognizable athletes the world has ever known? If you’re also a motorcycle enthusiast, the answer is simple; you go Superbike racing, and you give it your all.
Seven-time F1 champion Michael Schumacher got some notoriety last year when he posted some fast practice times on a Honda CBR1000RR in Hungary. He’d already been club roadracing for a couple of years when Honda reportedly offered him a chance to ride in the World Superbike championship, but Schumacher opted out, preferring to race in the smaller pond of the German Superbike series with Team Honda-Holzauer.
But he’s still giving it his all, making a splash in the press when he (frequently) crashes. Last weekend, while testing in Cartagena, Spain, Schumacher hit some bumps and went down, whacking his helmet on the pavement. An emergency-room visit revealed no lasting injuries, so his motorcycle racing career can continue to flourish. “If he wants to break his neck at the age of 40 then he should keep going,” said veteran racer Max Biaggi to the German newspaper Bild. “Motorcycle racing is a dangerous hobby.”
What do you think? Would you keep racing if you were a 40-year-old billionaire? Send your thoughts here.
