Intermot Debut of 2001 Suzuki GSX-R600 and 1000

Concurrent with the U.S. launch of Suzuki’s 2001 model range, we will present a full press kit of photos. In the meantime, however, Suzuki has debuted its new supersport models at the Intermot show in Munich, Germany.

Although we will bring you photos later, the Intermot introduction of these models has revealed their specifications. Hold on to your seat!

First of all, the 600 will be fuel injected (no surprise there) and weigh in at 163 kilograms (yes, that’s 358 pounds) dry, with a claimed power output of 114 horsepower at the crank. With essentially the same frame as its 750 brother (with different beam wall thickness — less thick in the case of the 600), the 600 carries many of the innovations first introduced on the 750.

The 2001 GSX-R1000, meanwhile, is the real stunner. With roughly 162 horsepower at the crank (close to 140 at the rear wheel), the 988cc motor features an exhaust valve (similar to Yamaha’s EXUP system) for improved torque throughout the powerband, and weighs just 375 pounds (roughly the weight of Honda’s re-designed 600). The 1000 also features six-piston brake calipers in front, and, get this, inverted forks with titanium coated sliders (when have you seen that on a production bike?).

The engine’s pistons in the 1000 are reportedly lighter than those found in the 750!

We couldn’t let this news from the Intermot pass us by, but expect a more thorough report in a few days.
