Yamaha’s Tim Ferry is an excellent rider, both indoors and outdoors. He clearly had an advantage over the two-stroke 250s while riding his YZ426F in the Outdoor Nationals this year, however. Ricky Carmichael and others commented that certain tracks (such as those with steep uphills right out of corners) gave the YZ426F a clear edge.
Now, Honda’s Ricky Carmichael says he is seriously considering riding the new CRF450R four-stroke outdoors next year. Assuming Suzuki has its RM450F (or whatever their four-stroke ends up being called) available by then, expect the 2002 250 Outdoor National Motocross championship to feature a much larger number of top riders on four-strokes.
