2003 WSB Will Include 1000cc Four-Cylinder Machines

As announced by various press organizations, the World Superbike promoters, SBK, have issued a press release confirming the approval of rule changes for the 2003 WSB championship. Those rule changes will allow 1000cc four-cylinder motorcycles to compete with specified air restrictions (presumably, intake) and a minimum weight of 168 kilograms (370 pounds).

It is likely that regional superbike championships (including, the AMA Superbike championship) will follow suit. Additionally, expect accelerated development of 1000cc, four-cylinder sportbikes for homologation purposes. Honda, for instance, is rumored to be developing a 1000cc V-4 for WSB racing, which, of course, will have to be homologated as a street-legal machine.
