The Dallas round of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross series last Saturday evening resulted in season-ending injuries for TwoTwo Motorsports Chad Reed (Honda). While in a tight battle with Ryan Villopoto (Kawasaki) for the lead, Reed went down extremely hard and seemed to have his foot caught up in his motorcycle. The result was a series of injuries detailed in the press release below. Among those injuries is a torn ACL in his knee that typically takes a minimum of three months of healing and rehab. Reed will miss the entire remainder of the 2012 series . . . a series in which he clearly was a contender for the title this year. Our best wishes to Reed for a full and complete recovery that will allow him to return to racing in the not-too-distant future.
Carlsbad, California – In a devastating blow for TwoTwo Motorsports Chad Reed, injuries sustained at last weekend’s Dallas round of the AMA Supercross, have forced him to retire from the remainder of the 2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship.
Reed suffered a horrific crash while challenging for the race lead on Lap 7 and was unable to finish the race.
Initial scans have revealed the Australian has torn his anterior cruciate ligament, broken his tibia and fibula, sustained two broken ribs and has a broken T6 vertebrae.
At this point in time doctors are waiting for the swelling on his knee to subside before they conduct surgery.
“To say I am hurting right now would be a major understatement,” Reed said. “I am just trying to figure out what hurts more, the injuries or the fact that I am going to be out for a while with knee surgery.
“This is bitterly disappointing, I felt like I had everything in my corner this time. I’ve never felt more comfortable, from the bike and team to my riding.
“I was genuinely in a position to fight for race wins week in week out and expected to be going to Las Vegas for a shot at the title.
“To my sponsors and fans thank-you for your messages of support, they mean a lot. This is a difficult time,” Reed added.
The TwoTwo Motorsports team and sponsors will regroup over the next week and formulate a plan to move forward.
Reed is aiming to return for the outdoor season but that goal will be re-evaluated by doctors post surgery.
Those Aussies seem tough as nails, when you can see they’re hurting, it’s bad. Heal well and quickly Chad.
That would be very cool if he could get Tomac on the bike, but I think he’s still a little injured? And I wonder if he would want to risk getting off his game or getting injured when he comes back to the 250f…Either way, Reed was the only REAL competition for RV. Damn it Damn it Damn it!!!
Not even close.
To GP –
He’ll never be Stewart. That is totally the rudest comment I’ve seen posted.
Get well CR spend some quality time with the family before you come back.
Didn’t see the crash, bit the list of injuries is nasty! Broken ribs, leg, and a VERTEBRAE!!! And he is most concerned about the knee! I guess the back injury is not that bad, or they can easily fuse it??
Hope he has a speedy and complete recovery!
Time to catch up on the videos (On Any Sunday, Fastest Indian, Terminator 2, or anything with two wheels!!)
I feel for him I had a pcl grade 3 Plato fracture of the tibe horn,
Which meat things right up,and I’m self employed carpet fitter, back on bike now but
Give me jip
Whatta shame. He seemed to have Villopoto covered this week. He seems to be the only hope Honda had. Wonder what Tomac is up to?
Sad news. Hope he heals fast. Wonder who the replacement will be. He has sponsor and team obligations to keep in mind. Who do you think Chad will ask to ride for his team while he recovers?
What was the boot he was wearing? It seemed to me clear that there was something on the boot which caught on the peg.
When racers get hurt like this late in their career it’s a bad sign.
He should retire before he ends up in a chair.
Get well, Chad.
Hope you heal up and can come back strong.
What I’m wondering now is whether or not the remaining races in the Supercross class will be boring runaways.
We’re just heartbroken over this news, everything was going so well he was in reach of the title. We hope and pray he heals well and quickly. As for Two Two Motorsports I wonder how that is going to go forward not like they have a team he is the “team” no one to step in and finish like Canard did for Shorty. What responsibilities do his sponsors have to continue their support other than their integrity?
A real bummer, for fans and of course Chad as well!
Too bad, he was looking very good but that was a nasty get off.
