In two closely fought races, Frankie Chili (Suzuki) edged Colin Edwards (Honda) in race one, with the reverse occuring in race two. Third and fourth place were identical in the two races, with Akira Yanagawa (Kawasaki) in third, and Carl Fogarty’s stand in, Troy Bayliss (Ducati) in fourth.
A change in the points occurred when Yamaha’s Noriyuki Haga had mechanical problems in the first race, allowing Edwards to take the points’ lead in the championship.
