Kawasaki Reveals New MX Suspension System

At the opening round of the MX1 World Motocross championship series at Zolder this weekend, Kawasaki rider Antoine Meo was aboard a KX250 equipped with a prototype rear suspension system. The shock was laid horizontal under the engine (similar to a Buell street bike), but still appears to employ a traditional linkage system. You can see a photo of Meo’s bike at RealMX.com here.

Why would Kawasaki test this design? A couple of reasons. First of all, this would allow Kawasaki to have a direct, straight path between the air box and the carburetor, increasing power. KTM achieves this same result with its offset, linkageless rear suspension, and frequently produces the highest horsepower output in a given class from its stock two-strokes. This design would also allow Kawasaki to increase air box volume, and lower the center of gravity.

The shock location appears very vulnerable, however, and if it is to see production, one would expect a skid plate of some sort to be added by Kawasaki.
