With three races, and three victories, under his belt this year so far, Suzuki’s Mat Mladin looks absolutely unstoppable in his quest for a fifth AMA Superbike championship. Daytona always involves some luck, but the double-header at Fontana last weekend showed Mladin and his team have no peer at this point, as he easily dispatched the three factory Hondas and the factory Ducati (ridden by Eric Bostrom).
Watching Mladin at Fontana made me wish I could see him compete with some of the World championship superbike and MotoGP riders. He looks that confident, and in control, at this point.
Granted, Mladin and his Suzuki have an awful lot of experience, and development, while Eric Bostrom is in his first year on the Ducati, and all of the Honda riders are developing an entirely new machine this year. Nevertheless, the gap between Mladin’s level at Fontana and that of his rivals was huge, and might be difficult to overcome as the series progresses.
